Working Holiday Brisbane — the honest guide

Brisbane is the best city in Australia to work and travel. Here is everything you need to set it up right.

We have watched thousands of backpackers arrive in Brisbane on a working holiday visa. The ones who get set up fast all do the same things in the same order. This page tells you exactly what that order is.

Get this done first

The first week in Brisbane. Do this in order.

Every working holiday traveller who gets set up fast does these seven things in their first week. Skip any of them and you spend the rest of your stay fixing it. Do them in order.

RSA Certificate — Responsible Service of Alcohol

  • Who needs it: Anyone working in hospitality — bars, cafes, restaurants, clubs, events, festivals.
  • Cost: $35-60 AUD
  • Time: One day (usually a morning session)
  • Valid for: Nationally recognised, no expiry

Without an RSA you cannot legally serve alcohol in Queensland. Most hospitality employers will not even interview you without one. Book it before you start job hunting — not after.

Second year visa

The 88-day regional work requirement. What it actually means.

To qualify for a second-year working holiday visa in Australia, you need to complete 88 days (3 months) of specified regional work. This includes farm work, agricultural packing, fishing, and some construction in regional areas.

The closest regional work areas to Brisbane are the Lockyer Valley (90 minutes west — broccoli, tomatoes, capsicum), the Sunshine Coast hinterland (90 minutes north — strawberries), and the Darling Downs (2 hours west — grain, vegetables).

Our strong recommendation: do your regional work before you settle in Brisbane, not after. It is much harder to motivate yourself to leave once you have a job, a routine, and friends in the city.

The regional work clock starts from your first day on the farm or site. Keep every payslip. You will need them for your visa extension application.
Most popular

🌾 Lockyer Valley

90 min west of Brisbane. Vegetable farms. Active year-round. Easiest to access from Brisbane. Well-established backpacker accommodation at Gatton and Laidley.

Seasonal

🍓 Sunshine Coast Hinterland

90 min north. Strawberry farms peak June-October. Maroochydore and Nambour are your base towns. Some farms provide accommodation.

🌾 Darling Downs

2 hours west. Cotton, wheat, and vegetable operations. Toowoomba is the main hub. Longer-term placements available through labour hire.

Get your money back

Almost every working holiday traveller is owed a tax refund. Most never claim it.

Working holiday makers in Australia pay tax at 15% on the first $45,000 of income. If you leave Australia without lodging a tax return, that money stays with the ATO forever.

The average WHV tax refund is $1,500-$2,500 AUD. For most backpackers that is a flight home, a month of travel, or a significant buffer for the next destination.

You can lodge your own return for free at my.gov.au once you link your myGov account to the ATO. If you want someone else to handle it, the services below are legitimate.

Keep every payslip and payment summary from every job you work in Australia. You will need them for your tax return. Take photos of paper payslips and save them to cloud storage.

Lodge it yourself (free)

myGov + ATO online is free, takes about 30 minutes, and the refund arrives within 2 weeks of lodging. Best option if you have straightforward income from 1-2 employers.

👞
Wear closed-toe shoes to your labour hire registration

Every experienced hostel manager has seen this. Backpackers who show up in thongs or sandals get processed last. Wear shoes. Bring a printed resume. You will be called first.

🕔
The Coles and Woolworths deli section marks down at 4:45pm

Hot food, sandwiches, and prepared meals get 50% discount before close. The city centre Coles on Queen Street and Woolworths at Myer Centre. Get there at 4:45, not 5:00.

📱
Follow up your labour hire registration with a phone call

Agencies receive dozens of online registrations per day. A phone call the next morning saying 'I registered yesterday and I am available immediately' moves you to the top of the active list.

💰
Always ask about weekly rates before booking nightly

Every hostel in Brisbane has weekly rates. They are typically 20-30% cheaper than paying nightly. Ask on arrival. If you are staying more than 4 nights, weekly is always worth it.

🚌
The Go Card saves you nearly 50% on public transport

A single-trip paper ticket from Roma Street to South Bank costs about $4.60. With a Go Card it costs $2.85. Buy one at Roma Street station on arrival. Load $20 minimum.

📄
Apply for your TFN before you need it, not after

The ATO sends TFNs by post to your registered address. If you are moving between hostels, use the address of the hostel you plan to stay longest at. Takes 2-4 weeks to arrive — do not wait until your first employer asks for it.

🌾
Do your regional work first if you want a second-year visa

Once you settle into Brisbane — friends, a job, a routine — it is very hard to leave for three months on a farm. Do the hard thing first. Come back to Brisbane after. You will enjoy it more.

🍺
Book your RSA before you start job hunting, not after

RSA certificates are required for almost all hospitality work. The course takes one day and costs $35-60. Every day you wait is a day you cannot apply for cafe, bar, or restaurant work.
